Matheus Diniz drew inspiration from Brazilian Modernism and architect Severiano Porto's organic timber forms to design Casa Una. The building's green roof, a standout feature, appears to peel off from the park surface, extending its area. The curves of the building follow the adjoining lake, bringing dynamism to its form and transforming it at every new viewpoint.
Casa Una is more than just a community center; it's a focal point for a new mixed-use neighborhood. Housing a food hall, an open auditorium, an exhibition space, and an office for the community association, the building also serves as a social program for high school students of the public education system. Its multi-purpose nature makes it a unique addition to the cityscape.
The building's structure is made from laminated timber from certified sources, left exposed to showcase its natural beauty. The roof is composed of OSB panels and a vegetation system that helps cool the interior spaces. Passive techniques such as cross ventilation and heat exhaust openings further cool the building, while exterior openings are fitted with glass that reduces solar heat gain.
The building's design was a creative challenge, with the need to negotiate between different functions and their relationship with the public park. The solution was a curved roof that adjusted to the needs of each interior use. The result is a curved form with a twisted curving roof, perfectly positioned in a prominent position on a public park.
Casa Una is a testament to the power of sustainable design and community engagement. It's not just a building; it's a space that brings people together, fosters community spirit, and promotes sustainable living. Its recognition with a Silver A' Architecture, Building and Structure Design Award in 2023 is a testament to its innovative design and potential impact on the community.
